English, Tracy Hayward:

The English unit will explore the prevalence of drugs and alcohol in literature, plays, poetry and music. Throughout the unit, students will be asked to make connections with what we are learning to their own experiences with drugs and alcohol, and will be asked to think and write critically about these experiences in essays and journal writing. In order for students to connect to this lesson I have devoted five full days of this unit to hip-hop. This is so that students can grasp the significance of drugs and alcohol in relation to hip-hop and the media. I will ask students to think and write critically about these issues as well. We will also spend a couple of days discussing peer pressure, and the importance of independent thinking. At the end of the unit, students will be required to pick some of their favorite writings from the short essay assignments or their journals and rewrite them once. We will then bind each of these together into a book of thoughts, opinions and ideas.
